We’re going Fine Free!

  Posted on: February 1, 2017

The TRU Library is following in the footsteps of libraries like Vancouver Island University and getting rid of overdue fines.

“The real goal is not to be punitive but to get items back on the shelves,” said Katherine Watmough, Access and User Services Librarian. “When people are subject to fines they are afraid to return items. We want to encourage people to come into the library and utilize our services, regardless of a late return.”

Have a book at home that’s long overdue? Don’t fret. All current fines for late returns will also be wiped clear—so bring in that late return, fine free.

However, if an item remains overdue for too long, it will be assumed lost, and you will no longer be able to check out new items until the book is returned and your balance is settled.

This policy does not apply to AV equipment, interlibrary loans, reserves, and recalls, which will still be subject to overdue fines.

The library will continue to email reminders to patrons three days and one day before books are due. Emails are sent to TRU email addresses, and it is your responsibility as the patron to check this email address.

Visit the library website for policy details and a full list of services and events.
