Sharpened Pencils and New Notebooks: Signs of the New Year

  Posted on: August 27, 2013

image of Muppets lunch box The “New Year” starts in September, not January. This was the case back when “back to school” meant new crayons and a Muppets lunchbox, and it still feels that way now, as university faculty gearing up for the Fall semester.

At the TRU Library, we’re busy getting ready for classes in all sorts of ways. Reserves are starting to come in from instructional faculty: course packages, solutions manuals, and supplemental readings. Library tours and workshops are being added to our calendar of drop-in sessions. Faculty are booking library instruction sessions to ensure students have the tools and skills needed to successfully complete research assignments. Weekend and evening hours are scheduled to resume September 4th.

Librarians will be attending Learning at the Centre, Family Orientation, JumpStart, Sekúsen’t Orientation, Fall Orientation, and the annual TRUSU BBQ. Of all the campus events we’re involved with, Fall Orientation Week is perhaps our favourite, especially as it continues to grow and develop into all of the above events. There’s a contagious energy that builds on campus in late August, an anticipation of another academic year, and another group of new students to meet and to welcome into this academic world of ours. This is why I say that September is in fact the “New Year”. Not to mention that we get to give out all sorts of great library swag, and spend  sunny afternoons out talking with students and faculty.

As you attend this year’s Orientation events, keep an eye out for the TRU Library table, and drop by to see us; we’ll be the librarians having way too much fun handing out frisbees and welcoming students back for what we expect will be another great year.

See you out on the Campus Commons…and later on, at the Library!
